When buying car insurance, everyone wants to have peace of mind and know that should they need to make a claim, the insurance company will be there. Whether you have an insurance policy now or you are researching companies to find a new policy, it is worth your time to find the best insurance provider for you. The first thing to do is to see how your insurance provider stacks up against the competition. There are independent rating agencies that look at the financials of each insurance company and give them a rating much like a report card. The largest provider of this information is A.M. Best. They provide news and financial ratings on companies in the insurance industry. They have reviews not only for car insurance providers, but also for life insurance companies, home insurance companies and companies that provide nearly every other kind of insurance you might need. If you go to the site, http://www.ambest.com/consumers/ and click on the link that says “Search for an insurer” you can enter the criteria to search for. For example, let’s say you want to check out the rating for Geico Insurance. Enter the word “geico” in the text box and hit search. When the results come back, they will show you what the current rating is for Geico Insurance. As of this writing, they have a rating of A++, or superior, which is the highest possible rating given by A.M. Best. According to the definition on Best’s web site, only 1 in 1,667 companies with this rating will go out of business. In practical terms, this means that you are safe having your insurance coverage with this company and they have the financial resources to stand behind any claims that are made. Compare the rating given to Geico with a company like Argus Fire & Casualty Insurance Company. As of the time of this writing, Best gives them a rating of D. According to the definition, Best says that 1 in 14 companies with this rating can be expected to go out of business and businesses with this rating are 123 times more likely to go out of business than a company with a superior rating. Does this mean you should not do business with a company like Argus? Well, it is certainly more risky and the odds of them not being able to pay a claim are much higher. So even if you get what seems like an amazing deal from a company like Argus, you should certainly consider their rating before making a decision to go with them. Knowing that your car insurance company will be there in your time of need can give you great peace of mind.
